SUNDERLAND’S SUNNISIDE MARKET
TURNS A NEW PAGE

20 March 2026

SUNDERLAND’s popular monthly market will become a real page turner, thanks to the addition of a new vendor.

Sunniside Market at Sunniside Gardens is set to return on Saturday 28 March, with a host of artisan food offerings, arts and crafts sellers, free entertainment and a DJ.

And this time round the event is also welcoming Between The Lines, a unique bookseller which offers beautifully wrapped and carefully curated pre-loved books, which bring the element of surprise.

It was set up by Aloma Gallagher, inspired by turning buying a book into “a moment of discovery.”

“Some selections are perfect for a cosy night in, others lean into romance or gripping thrillers, and some are thoughtfully curated as meaningful gifts,” said Aloma.

“Every book is also carefully sourced second-hand, giving great stories a second life while offering a sustainable, thoughtful gift for readers and book lovers alike”

Along with being wrapped, the books all come with a handwritten bookmark, turning the giving of a loved novel or story into a special occasion.

“Between the Lines was created from two things I love most: books and the joy of building something of my own,” said Aloma

“My book stall brings together a carefully chosen mix of re-loved adult and children’s books, all in pristine condition, alongside gifts and little treasures for fellow book lovers.

“I’m thrilled to be part of Sunniside Market, contributing to its sustainable and community spirit while adding a touch of vintage charm for visitors who enjoy discovering stories.”

Families visiting the market can also enjoy free face painting and balloon modelling, with a magician on hand to add even more fun.

Food sellers from the Local Heroes community include Wear Beer, The Little Cakery, The Brownie Bar, Pink Lane Bakery, The Northern Bistro, Cracked Bean Roastery, Sunshine Co-operative and Acropolis.

A whole host of arts and crafts people will also be selling this time round, such as Melonz Hair Bar which will be offering hair braiding and artist Peter Hayes, who creates pet portraits.

Sunderland’s Art Café, Ameilia Gilchrist Photography, Kirka’s Corner and Sniff and Savour Dog Treats will be adding to the eclectic variety of stallholders, with the event running from 10am to 3pm.

The market also coincides with the unveiling of the new look Diego’s bar, with a day of giveaways, free pizza and the opportunity to meet a range of top brewers.

The event – which runs from noon until 5pm – is free or people can opt to buy a premium pass for £10 which gets them a branded pint glass, Diego’s Joint pin badge and bottle opener and 20 per cent discount off any purchases.

Roberta Redecke, Head of Business Services at Sunderland’s BIDs – which includes the City Centre BID and The Seafront BID – which supports the market said this was going to be an extra special event.

“The markets are already extremely popular and this time round we really have a huge variety of stall holders, a range of great entertainment for all of the family and of course an exciting new vendor,” she said.

“We’re delighted that Between The Lines is bringing their unique products to Sunniside and we’re sure it will be a real hit.”

Activities in the Sunniside area are part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
