A new artwork celebrating Sunderland band The Futureheads has been unveiled as part of the Sunderland Wall of Fame, located outside The Fire Station.
This unveiling took place directly after their 'An Evening with’ inside the venue, a magical night of stories and song. Commissioned by Sunderland Music City in partnership with The Fire Station, the piece has been created by Sunderland-based illustrator Kathryn Robertson, who works under the name 'KR Illustrates'.
The commission forms part of an ongoing programme to celebrate the city's most
significant musical voices and inspire future generations of artists. Formed in Sunderland in the early 2000s, The Futureheads emerged as one of the UK's
most distinctive post-punk revival bands.
Renowned for their intricate vocal harmonies, angular guitar sound and electrifying live performances, the band quickly gained international recognition following the release of their self-titled debut album in 2004.
Their acclaimed cover of Kate Bush's "Hounds of Love" became a UK Top 10 hit, helping to cement their reputation as one of the most innovative bands of their generation. The new artwork was revealed by members of the band, following an acoustic version of that very Top 10 hit.
The artwork draws inspiration from The Futureheads' enduring connection to their
hometown, in Mackem red and white, celebrating both their musical achievements and the pride they continue to bring to Sunderland. Situated outside The Fire Station, a landmark venue at the heart of Sunderland's Culture Quarter, the Wall of Fame has become a growing tribute to the city's rich musical heritage.
The addition of The Futureheads further strengthens Sunderland's reputation as a city with a proud and influential music scene. Comprised of Barry Hyde, Ross Millard, David "JaW" Craig and Dave Hyde, The Futureheads have released a string of acclaimed albums and built a devoted following. More than two decades after forming, they remain one of Sunderland's most celebrated musical exports.
The unveiling coincided with a special homecoming event at The Fire Station, An
Evening with The Futureheads, on Saturday 20 June. The intimate evening saw the band reflect on their career, share stories from their journey and perform songs spanning their catalogue. Giving fans a unique opportunity to celebrate Sunderland's musical heritage alongside one of its most beloved bands.
Michelle Daurat, Sunderland Music City CEO, said:
"We're proud to celebrate The Futureheads as an integral part of Sunderland's music story. Their originality, ambition and enduring success have inspired musicians and audiences alike, and this commission ensures their contribution is recognised in a way that is visible, lasting and inspiring."
Andrew Dipper, Marketing and Sales Director at The Fire Station, said:
"As the Wall of Fame continues to grow, it's becoming a powerful way to celebrate artists who come from Sunderland and the impact this city has had on music far beyond its boundaries.
Welcoming The Futureheads onto the wall is about recognising Sunderland-made talent and making those contributions visible, valued and proudly part of our public space.
"The fact that audiences can also join us for An Evening with The Futureheads at The Fire Station makes this celebration even more special, giving people the chance to hear directly from the band and reflect on their remarkable contribution to the city."
