Sunderland Kids Get Snug With Elmer This Summer

15 July 2019

Children’s storybook sensation, Elmer, is coming to Sunderland this July for a very special series of free story time sessions.

The ScS Story Snug, featuring ScS’ ele-fantastic patchwork chair and Patchwork Penny sculpture, will be open to children of all ages from Monday 22 July - with a free goodie bag available for the first 15 at each session.

There’s tonnes of fun to be had as children hear the iconic story of Elmer the patchwork elephant in the lead up to Elmer’s Great North Parade, a free art trail in support of St. Oswald’s Hospice.

Seven of the Great North Parade sculptures will be perfectly placed in Sunderland for the duration of the trail. With sponsors Sunderland BID, the Bridges, ScS, Gentoo, The Beacon of Light, Sunderland Business Group, Stagecoach, Sunderland City Council and Everyone Active, and Tyne and Wear Metro funding elephants across the city centre and all the way to the seafront.

Marie Liston, Corporate Services Director at ScS, believes that the story time sessions are not to be missed. She said: “Elmer is a fantastic story that encourages people to come together to celebrate their individuality, which is something we encourage as a business and employer.

“We’re looking forward to supporting Elmer’s Great North Parade by working closely with other sponsors throughout the North East on a range of family-friendly activities this summer.”

The ScS Story Snug forms part of Sunderland BID’s Pop-Up Park, which has transformed Market Square with giant games, themed weeks and deck chairs and bean bags to sit on and soak up the sun.

Sharon Appleby, Head of Business Operations at Sunderland BID, believes that the Elmer story time sessions will be hugely popular.

She said: “Elmer is one of the most widely-read children’s books of all time, and we’re looking forward to sharing his story with families across Sunderland this summer.

“For parents it’s often a nightmare thinking how to keep children amused in the school holidays, but I think we’ve definitely solved that problem. The combination of the ScS Story Snug, Pop-Up Park and the beach at the Bridges means the city centre will have lots to offer throughout the summer.”

The ScS Story Snug will be holding two special Elmer sessions each day from Monday 22 July – Thursday 25 July. The morning sessions will take place from 11am-12pm, with the afternoon sessions running from 2-3pm. Places are allocated on a first come first serve basis.
