Budding photographers can play a part in a Sunderland photographic experiment with a pop-up event at the Bridges this week.

On Thursday and Friday 6 and 7 September, the #wearexperimenting project will be on hand at the city’s shopping centre, giving shoppers the chance to get artistic in the malls.

The two-day event is part of a city-wide experiment by Sunderland photographic artist, Jo Howell, who is trying to engage as many Wearside residents as possible.

Using a combination of photography and science, Jo is getting out and about across the city organising workshops in conjunction with the Cultural Spring, an Arts Council England-funded project and NEPN (North East Photography Network) utilising unusual household objects.

Previous workshops have included taking photographs using a wheelie bin as a camera, using coffee tins to photograph buildings around the city and using microscopes to produce portraits.

At the Bridges event, Jo will be giving visitors the opportunity to make their own pinhole cameras and work with microscopes to take pictures which reflect their mood.

People will then be urged to post their work onto social media using the hashtag #wearexperimenting.

“The #wearexperimenting project has already had a lot of interest across the city and we are looking forward to welcoming Jo Howell to the Bridges for her pop-up workshop,” said Bridges Marketing and Communications Manager, Samantha Czwordon-Auld.

“It’s a fascinating opportunity to learn more about these exciting methods of using everyday objects to take unusual images here in the centre.

“It’s always great to encourage local artists and I’ve been really impressed with the work Jo and the North East Photography Network have already done in the city. I hope shoppers will drop in and take part when she visits the Bridges this week.”

Jo will be running her workshop at the area outside Tesco from 9am-7pm on Thursday 6 and 9am-5pm on Friday 7 September.
