Lunar New Year is a festival celebrating the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunar calendar. Sunderland City Centre will celebrate the occasion on 9 February this year in Sunniside Gardens.

We have lots planned for everyone to enjoy, including a range of musical performances including classical and modern dance, as well as musicians playing Chinese classical instruments and a fashion show.

The day will feature the culture of everywhere from China to Malaysia, from Myanmar to Indonesia, Vietnam and Singapore.

Visitors will be able to watch an authentic dragon dance, as well as taking part in workshops including paper cutting crafts to celebrate the Year of the Snake, with sessions to make Chinese figures and snake bookmarks on offer to younger children.

There will be the opportunity to try the noble art of origami – paper folding – as well as calligraphy, with visitors also able to buy Asian-inspired goods such as dragon puppets, masks and Chinese snacks.

Food traders will also be in line with the theme of the day, including Japanese street food experts, Arigato and XL Sushi, which offers hot sushi and Katsu curry dishes, with more vendors to be announced.

Dance in the Year of the Snake with us as we celebrate Lunar New Year.

Set in the summer of 1984 – Margaret Thatcher is in power, and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support.

But the activists are not deterred. They decide to ignore the Union and go direct to the miners. They identify a mining village in deepest Wales and set off in a minibus to make their donation in person. And so begins the extraordinary story of two seemingly alien communities who form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership.
